Discovering Labradorite: The Stone of Transformation
Labradorite specimen

Labradorite is a gemstone known for its stunning play of colors and mystical qualities. Its unique properties make it a favorite among gemstone enthusiasts and jewelry lovers alike. In this blog, we will explore the origins, formation, variations, metaphysical properties, historical uses, and some fun facts about Labradorite.

Where is Labradorite Found?

Labradorite was first discovered on the Isle of Paul in Labrador, Canada, in the late 18th century. Since then, it has been found in various parts of the world, including:

  • Canada: Primarily in Labrador and Newfoundland.
  • Finland: Known as Spectrolite, a highly colorful variety.
  • Russia: Especially in the Ural Mountains.
  • Madagascar: A significant source of high-quality Labradorite.
  • Norway: Particularly Larvikite, a type of Labradorite.

How is Labradorite Formed?

The science "geek" in me loves this stuff. If it sounds boring to you then just skip to the next section. :) Labradorite is a feldspar mineral, typically found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Igneous basically means rock that formed when molten lava cooled. Metamorphic means rock that changed its original form due to high heat or high pressure. Labradorite forms in large, crystalline masses within these rocks and is known for its labradorescence – a unique optical phenomenon where the stone exhibits a brilliant play of colors, typically blue, green, yellow, and sometimes orange or red. This effect is caused by the diffraction of light within the layers of the mineral.

Variations of Labradorite

Blue Labradorite: Known for its intense blue hues, this type of Labradorite is highly sought after for its striking appearance.

Larvikite: Sometimes referred to as Black Moonstone or Norwegian Moonstone, Larvikite is a type of Labradorite found in Norway, known for its silver-blue labradorescence.

Metaphysical Properties of Labradorite

Labradorite is often called the "Stone of Transformation" and is believed to have powerful metaphysical properties:

  • Enhances Intuition: Labradorite is said to awaken one's intuitive abilities and psychic powers.
  • Protective Stone: It is thought to create a shielding force throughout the aura, protecting against negativity.
  • Stimulates Imagination: This stone is believed to boost creativity and bring forth new ideas.

Fun Facts About Labradorite

  • Geological Wonder: Labradorite's unique optical effect, labradorescence, is not found in many minerals, making it a geological wonder.
  • Moonstone Relative: Labradorite is closely related to Moonstone, another feldspar mineral known for its adularescence (a different type of optical effect).
  • Inuit Legend: According to Inuit folklore, the Northern Lights were once

trapped in the rocks along the coast of Labrador. An Inuit warrior struck the rocks with his spear, releasing most of the lights, but some remained trapped in the stone, giving birth to Labradorite.
